Laser therapy for nail fungus
How does laser treatment of nail fungus work?
The laser beam works selectively by using heat to damage only the fungi in the nail. The nail structure and the remaining tissue are not damaged. The success of the laser treatment only becomes visible when the nail grows back healthily. This takes between 6 and 12 months.
Is the treatment painful?
Heat is generated during the laser treatment. This can sometimes cause a slight tingling sensation on the nail. As soon as the patient feels the slight warming, the laser treatment on the respective nail or area is ended.
How long does the nail fungus laser treatment take?
Treatment with our nail fungus laser takes approx. 15-30 minutes. Depending on the infestation, two to six laser treatments are required at intervals of around 1 - 4 weeks for permanent healing. We generally treat all toenails, as healthy-looking nails may already be infected by the infected nail without any visible signs of a fungal infection.
How high is the healing rate with the nail fungus laser?
In a scientific study, the healing rate after 4 laser sessions without accompanying treatments was around 75 percent. Our pre-treatment (grinding down the nails) and post-treatment with an anti-fungal cream should result in higher healing rates.
The healing rate and the procedure depend on the infestation pattern. If the marginal parts of the nails are affected, a very high healing rate can be assumed, especially with our combination treatment (grinding off the fungus-infested parts of the nail, accompanied by daily application of a special anti-fungal cream).
In the case of complete nail infestation, additional internal fungal therapy with tablets may be useful, provided there is nothing to prevent it in your case. The use of tablets must be carefully considered, as this can also be associated with side effects. However, laser treatment can significantly reduce the period of internal fungal treatment.
Our aim is always to cure 100% of nail fungus, whereby the safety of the treatment always plays the biggest role. Therefore, if in doubt, laser treatment, which may take longer, should be preferred to tablet therapy, especially if side effects or interactions with other medications are to be expected.
We offer nail fungus laser therapy in our specialized practice. The basis for professional treatment is Dr. Kuhr 's laser experience and the team of experienced medical chiropodists. This means you receive all the necessary measures from a single source.
Is the treatment an insurance benefit that is covered by private health insurance companies?
Laser treatment of nail fungus is undoubtedly a medical service. Patients with private insurance are generally reimbursed for the treatment. However, if in doubt, you should check the reimbursement situation with your insurance company. If your private health insurance company requests a medical certificate, we will be happy to provide you with an informative letter. We bill the therapy with so-called analog numbers for laser therapy at the normal increase factor and adhere to the guidelines of the German Medical Association. Unfortunately, nail fungus laser treatment is not covered by statutory insurance .
What does the treatment cost?
The cost of laser therapy for self-payers and privately insured persons is around 80-140 euros per session. The treatment costs depend on the amount of treatment required (number of affected nails, area of infected nail parts, etc.) and are determined during the medical examination. According to current knowledge, 2 to 6 treatments should be carried out at intervals of around 1 - 4 weeks for long-term healing.
